We&nbsp;have&nbsp;always&nbsp;been&nbsp;around&nbsp;each&nbsp;other.&nbsp;&nbsp;Never&nbsp;formally&nbsp;introduced&nbsp;but&nbsp;shared&nbsp;common&nbsp;friends.&nbsp;&nbsp;It&nbsp;was&nbsp;my&nbsp;birthday&nbsp;party&nbsp;on&nbsp;a&nbsp;party&nbsp;bus&nbsp;when&nbsp;a&nbsp;common&nbsp;friend&nbsp;brought&nbsp;him&nbsp;as&nbsp;guest.&nbsp;&nbsp;It&nbsp;was&nbsp;then&nbsp;that&nbsp;we&nbsp;were&nbsp;formally&nbsp;introduced.&nbsp;&nbsp;Since&nbsp;then&nbsp;we&nbsp;became&nbsp;official&nbsp;friends&nbsp;and&nbsp;saw&nbsp;each&nbsp;other&nbsp;in&nbsp;the&nbsp;neighborhood.&nbsp; We&nbsp;never&nbsp;really&nbsp;became&nbsp;close&nbsp;until&nbsp;one&nbsp;summer&nbsp;afternoon,&nbsp;I&nbsp;had&nbsp;locked&nbsp;myself&nbsp;outside&nbsp;my&nbsp;apartment&nbsp;while&nbsp;doing&nbsp;laundry,&nbsp;with&nbsp;no&nbsp;phone&nbsp;or&nbsp;wallet.&nbsp;&nbsp;I&nbsp;walked&nbsp;all&nbsp;the&nbsp;way&nbsp;to&nbsp;my&nbsp;parents’&nbsp;house&nbsp;hoping&nbsp;to&nbsp;get&nbsp;my&nbsp;spare,&nbsp;but&nbsp;alas&nbsp;no&nbsp;one&nbsp;was&nbsp;home.&nbsp;&nbsp;Tried&nbsp;Mai&nbsp;but&nbsp;also&nbsp;no&nbsp;one&nbsp;was&nbsp;home.&nbsp;&nbsp;As&nbsp;I&nbsp;wandred&nbsp;thinking&nbsp;of&nbsp;what&nbsp;next&nbsp;to&nbsp;do,&nbsp;I&nbsp;ended&nbsp;up&nbsp;seeing&nbsp;Melan&nbsp;walking&nbsp;down&nbsp;his&nbsp;block&nbsp;with&nbsp;a&nbsp;friend&nbsp;we&nbsp;both&nbsp;knew.&nbsp;&nbsp;I&nbsp;explained&nbsp;my&nbsp;situation&nbsp;and&nbsp;decided&nbsp;to&nbsp;make&nbsp;best&nbsp;of&nbsp;the&nbsp;day&nbsp;and&nbsp;hanged&nbsp;out&nbsp;with&nbsp;them&nbsp;in&nbsp;the&nbsp;beautiful&nbsp;weather.&nbsp;&nbsp;About&nbsp;an&nbsp;hour&nbsp;or&nbsp;so&nbsp;later,&nbsp;he&nbsp;offered&nbsp;to&nbsp;help&nbsp;me&nbsp;get&nbsp;back&nbsp;inside&nbsp;my&nbsp;apartment.&nbsp;&nbsp;We&nbsp;walked&nbsp;over&nbsp;to&nbsp;my&nbsp;apartment&nbsp;and&nbsp;using&nbsp;an&nbsp;empty&nbsp;bottle&nbsp;of&nbsp;Downy&nbsp;he&nbsp;got&nbsp;me&nbsp;back&nbsp;inside&nbsp;the&nbsp;apartment.&nbsp;&nbsp;Thankful&nbsp;for&nbsp;his&nbsp;help&nbsp;I&nbsp;offered&nbsp;to&nbsp;get&nbsp;him&nbsp;dinner.&nbsp;&nbsp;A&nbsp;friendship&nbsp;bloomed.&nbsp;&nbsp;The&nbsp;friendship&nbsp;that&nbsp;started&nbsp;that&nbsp;day&nbsp;ultimately&nbsp;grew&nbsp;into&nbsp;the&nbsp;relationship&nbsp;we&nbsp;have&nbsp;today.

LONGER&nbsp;VERSION:&nbsp;Let&nbsp;me&nbsp;start&nbsp;off&nbsp;by&nbsp;saying&nbsp;it&nbsp;was&nbsp;truly&nbsp;unexpected.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;We&nbsp;share&nbsp;November&nbsp;as&nbsp;our&nbsp;&nbsp;birthday&nbsp;month.&nbsp;And&nbsp;anyone&nbsp;who&nbsp;knows&nbsp;us,&nbsp;we&nbsp;take&nbsp;birthdays&nbsp;very&nbsp;seriously.&nbsp;&nbsp;This&nbsp;particular&nbsp;year&nbsp;Melan&nbsp;was&nbsp;turning&nbsp;40.&nbsp;&nbsp;He&nbsp;had&nbsp;been&nbsp;talking&nbsp;about&nbsp;how&nbsp;he&nbsp;wanted&nbsp;to&nbsp;celebrate&nbsp;it.&nbsp;(Basically&nbsp;driving&nbsp;me&nbsp;insane&nbsp;with&nbsp;the&nbsp;planning&nbsp;of&nbsp;our&nbsp;birthday&nbsp;vacation).&nbsp;&nbsp;After&nbsp;much&nbsp;discussion&nbsp;we&nbsp;ended&nbsp;up&nbsp;deciding&nbsp;on&nbsp;St.&nbsp;Lucia.&nbsp;&nbsp;It&nbsp;was&nbsp;perfect&nbsp;for&nbsp;our&nbsp;birthday&nbsp;vacation&nbsp;since&nbsp;we&nbsp;both&nbsp;had&nbsp;never&nbsp;been&nbsp;there.&nbsp;&nbsp;Upon&nbsp;arrival&nbsp;he&nbsp;was&nbsp;beyond&nbsp;ridiculous.&nbsp;&nbsp;He&nbsp;went&nbsp;over&nbsp;the&nbsp;top&nbsp;with&nbsp;concierge&nbsp;service&nbsp;and&nbsp;our&nbsp;room.&nbsp;&nbsp;The&nbsp;whole&nbsp;time&nbsp;I&nbsp;just&nbsp;thought&nbsp;it&nbsp;was&nbsp;because&nbsp;it&nbsp;was&nbsp;a&nbsp;milestone&nbsp;birthday&nbsp;for&nbsp;him. Full&nbsp;disclosure,&nbsp;Melan&nbsp;was&nbsp;and&nbsp;is&nbsp;the&nbsp;romantic&nbsp;one&nbsp;between&nbsp;the&nbsp;two&nbsp;of&nbsp;us.&nbsp;&nbsp;On&nbsp;the&nbsp;day&nbsp;of&nbsp;my&nbsp;birthday,&nbsp;I&nbsp;woke&nbsp;up&nbsp;to&nbsp;breakfast&nbsp;served&nbsp;in&nbsp;bed.&nbsp;&nbsp;He&nbsp;woke&nbsp;up&nbsp;before&nbsp;me&nbsp;and&nbsp;was&nbsp;excited&nbsp;to&nbsp;start&nbsp;the&nbsp;day&nbsp;since&nbsp;he&nbsp;had&nbsp;so&nbsp;much&nbsp;planned.&nbsp;&nbsp;We&nbsp;spent&nbsp;the&nbsp;day&nbsp;in&nbsp;a&nbsp;private&nbsp;cabana&nbsp;swimming&nbsp;and&nbsp;drinking&nbsp;champagne.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;For&nbsp;dinner&nbsp;he&nbsp;surprised&nbsp;me&nbsp;with&nbsp;a&nbsp;romantic&nbsp;dinner&nbsp;by&nbsp;the&nbsp;beach&nbsp;complete&nbsp;with&nbsp;butler&nbsp;service&nbsp;and&nbsp;a&nbsp;photographer.&nbsp;&nbsp;As&nbsp;we&nbsp;ate,&nbsp;I&nbsp;laughed&nbsp;and&nbsp;giggled&nbsp;about&nbsp;the&nbsp;whole&nbsp;experience.&nbsp;&nbsp;It&nbsp;was&nbsp;truly&nbsp;a&nbsp;“Melan"&nbsp;type&nbsp;dinner.&nbsp;&nbsp;After&nbsp;dessert,&nbsp;he&nbsp;asked&nbsp;if&nbsp;I&nbsp;wanted&nbsp;to&nbsp;open&nbsp;my&nbsp;present&nbsp;pointing&nbsp;behind&nbsp;me&nbsp;to&nbsp;the&nbsp;butler.&nbsp;&nbsp;I&nbsp;turned&nbsp;around&nbsp;excited&nbsp;to&nbsp;see&nbsp;what&nbsp;my&nbsp;present&nbsp;was&nbsp;only&nbsp;to&nbsp;find&nbsp;an&nbsp;empty&nbsp;handed&nbsp;butler.&nbsp;&nbsp;As&nbsp;I&nbsp;turn&nbsp;back&nbsp;to&nbsp;face&nbsp;him&nbsp;he&nbsp;smiles&nbsp;and&nbsp;says&nbsp;happy&nbsp;birthday&nbsp;and&nbsp;places&nbsp;a&nbsp;small&nbsp;box&nbsp;in&nbsp;front&nbsp;of&nbsp;me.&nbsp;&nbsp;Sparkling&nbsp;in&nbsp;its&nbsp;box&nbsp;I&nbsp;looked&nbsp;at&nbsp;him&nbsp;to&nbsp;ask&nbsp;what&nbsp;it&nbsp;was&nbsp;and&nbsp;he&nbsp;says&nbsp;“What&nbsp;do&nbsp;you&nbsp;think&nbsp;it&nbsp;is?”&nbsp;&nbsp;Unable&nbsp;to&nbsp;speak&nbsp;and&nbsp;just&nbsp;frozen,&nbsp;he&nbsp;then&nbsp;proceeds&nbsp;to&nbsp;kneel&nbsp;by&nbsp;my&nbsp;side&nbsp;taking&nbsp;one&nbsp;hand&nbsp;into&nbsp;his.&nbsp;&nbsp;He&nbsp;then&nbsp;asks&nbsp;ever&nbsp;so&nbsp;softly,&nbsp;almost&nbsp;in&nbsp;a&nbsp;secret&nbsp;whisper,&nbsp;“Will&nbsp;you&nbsp;marry&nbsp;me?”&nbsp;&nbsp;Tears&nbsp;rolled&nbsp;faster&nbsp;than&nbsp;thoughts.&nbsp;&nbsp;I&nbsp;was&nbsp;frozen&nbsp;and&nbsp;could&nbsp;not&nbsp;speak.&nbsp;&nbsp;The&nbsp;first&nbsp;coherent&nbsp;sentence&nbsp;I&nbsp;could&nbsp;mutter&nbsp;was&nbsp;to&nbsp;ask&nbsp;if&nbsp;this&nbsp;was&nbsp;real&nbsp;since&nbsp;throughout&nbsp;our&nbsp;entire&nbsp;trip&nbsp;we&nbsp;joked&nbsp;about&nbsp;how&nbsp;everyone&nbsp;thought&nbsp;this&nbsp;was&nbsp;an&nbsp;engagement&nbsp;trip&nbsp;and&nbsp;how&nbsp;funny&nbsp;it&nbsp;would&nbsp;be&nbsp;to&nbsp;tease&nbsp;all&nbsp;our&nbsp;friends&nbsp;and&nbsp;family&nbsp;with&nbsp;an&nbsp;ambiguous&nbsp;hint&nbsp;to&nbsp;an&nbsp;engagement&nbsp;on&nbsp;this&nbsp;trip.&nbsp;&nbsp;When&nbsp;it&nbsp;did&nbsp;finally&nbsp;sink&nbsp;in,&nbsp;I&nbsp;was&nbsp;able&nbsp;to&nbsp;utter&nbsp;“YES”&nbsp;in&nbsp;between&nbsp;the&nbsp;joyful&nbsp;sobs.

If this is the first time travelling to the Philippines, here are some things to help you when booking your flight. Make sure to note when your arrival is. Flying to&nbsp;the Philippines will result in&nbsp;you losing&nbsp;a day.&nbsp;&nbsp;For example: Leaving on a Tuesday will have you arriving on Thursday.&nbsp;Please keep this in mind when booking.&nbsp;Your flight will consist of two layovers. What cities and how far apart the layovers will be dictated by the airline you chose. The airport code for Davao City is DVO. This should be your final destination. &nbsp;Most&nbsp;tickets will&nbsp;have Manila (MNL) or Cebu&nbsp;(CEB) as the point of entry into the Philippines. At this time there are no direct flights to Davao City available. Travel and Trip Details

The simplest way to get around Davao City is getting into&nbsp;a taxi. A typical trip can cost about&nbsp;₱110-₱200&nbsp;or approximately US$2-$5.&nbsp;More than usual taxi&nbsp;drivers in Davao rarely ever&nbsp;bargain if&nbsp;they notice that you are a tourist.&nbsp;If they do, simply state you prefer using the meter and if they refuse, get another taxi.&nbsp;&nbsp;Taxis start their fare at&nbsp;₱40 and charge&nbsp;₱8.10 per kilometer.One last thing, when you get to your destinations&nbsp;don't forget to say&nbsp;"salamat".&nbsp;This&nbsp;means thank you.

Pearl Farm Beach Resort was once home to a pearl farm, where precious pearls were nurtured and cultivated as the ocean’s most beautiful gems. Today, it is Samal Island’s jewel; an exceptional destination just off the coast of the bustling Davao City.&nbsp; Please note this resort is off the main land and additional transport is needed. A boat to and from the island is necessary. The good news is the dock for the boat is located near Waterfront hotel. Lying at the southeastern corner of the Philippines,&#160;Davao City is the largest city in the world (in square feet). It is also considered to be the Orchid Capital of the Philippines. It is also famous for fruits and as a take-off point for climbing Mt. Apo, the Philippines' highest mountain and habitat of the monkey-eating Philippine eagle. It has a mild pleasant climate all year round and is shielded from typhoons. Its setting on Davao Gulf and the fertility of the land have made Davao the agricultural and industrial center in the South. Must Try Restaurants 

1. <a href="https://www.facebook.com/DavaoDenciasRestaurant/">Dencias</a> - This is an old favorite. Chinese influenced menu.
You have to try : Fresh Lumpia, Tok'wat baboy (tofu and pork), Arroz Caldo, and Pancit (don't forget to get whole loaf to pair with pancit).
 
2. For the Sisig (sizzling pork) fans - stop by and grab lunch at <a href="https://www.facebook.com/sagayilonggocuisine">Casa Leticia&#8217;s Sagay Ilonggo Restaurant</a>. Their sisig is one of the best you will ever try. Their Batchoy Soup is also popular.
 
3. <a href="https://debontekoe.ph/">De Bonte Ko</a> - Another old favorite. Find yourself in a Dutch restaurant in Davao City. I have not ordered anything I did not enjoy in from here.
 
4. <a href="https://debontekoe.ph/">Bondi &amp; Bourke</a> - Australian inspired steakhouse. A beautiful restaurant perfect for a fancy night out.
 
5. <a href="https://www.jacksridgedavao.com/">Jack's Ridge Resort</a> - Come for the view . This restaurant commands a breathtaking view of Davao City while holding a rich historic past. They serve local cuisine and offers live music in their bar and grill section. They also have coffee shop if you need a pick me up.

Must Try Local Food

Since your in here might as well try some fruits and dishes you will may never see outside of the Philippines.
 
 
1. Durian - Named the world's smelliest fruit. This local favorite has been crowned the king of fruits. For us locals we love the smell and the taste. It has many types and is either loved or hated and nothing in between. It is eaten on its own or with soda. Try and see which group you fall under.
 
2. Bananacue - Skewered plantains cooked in brown sugar. If that didn't get your attention I don't know what will.
 
3. Ginanggang - Grilled skewered bananas brushed with margarine and sprinkled with sugar. Need I say more?
 
4. Pinaypay - Fried banana fritters. They get their name from looking like handheld fans called paypay.
 
5. Halo-Halo - Roughly translated as mix mix. Filipino version of bingsu. Loaded with fruits, sweet beans, flan, and ice cream. A favorite of the groom.
 
6. Taho - Made of fresh soft/silken tofu, arnibal, and sago pearl. All time favorite street food. Best serve from a walking peddler. Try if you want your mind blown.

Exploring Outside Davao

Since everyone is already in the Philippines, we thought it would be great see a couple of the beautiful sites and islands we have. One place we wanted to visit was the famous beaches of Boracay. We plan to visit Boracay the week after the wedding. If you were interested in joining us please send a note to us and we can share packages available for our group. we are still finalizing details but the target dates for Boracay is Aug 16 to 19. If you are planning on going to Boracay and leaving from there to head back to NYC/NJ, please reach out. Since you are coming from Boracay, your departing city heading back to should be Cebu (CEB).
