Exclusive: Lukas Graham Is Engaged to Longtime Love Rillo Schwartz
Singer Lukas Graham certainly had love on the mind when he enthusiastically agreed to help a fan propose at one of his recent shows.
The Danish artist, 30, invited two fans onstage midway through his performance, at which point, a man named Vincent Leonard got down on one knee and boldly declared to his tearful girlfriend, Alexandra Maillet: “When you love someone, you open your heart."
The line, of course, was taken directly from Graham’s smash 2018 single, “Love Someone." The song itself written for the love of his life, Rillo Schwartz, after the couple had welcomed their daughter, Viola, in October 2016.
“Becoming a father made me realize that if I’m not a good dad or husband, I will lose my family," Graham (nee Forchhammer) tells The Knot. "It was a scary thought, but a necessary one. Knowing that someone is more important than you… it sets your priorities straight.”
In fact, the "7 Years" hitmaker says he knew Schwartz was the one for him after his father passed away in 2012. "She dropped everything she had in her hands to lift me up off the floor," Graham recalls. “The way she shows compassion and generosity in abundance just has me in awe."
So much so that the high school classmates, who started dating in 2013, reveal to The Knot that they are now engaged and planning a wedding.
The proposal itself, according to Graham, took place at sunset on a rooftop--a gesture he describes as “very cliche and corny."
"But hey," he shrugs. "It worked."
The couple's wedding will likely take place at a rather sentimental location: the same church where Graham buried his father six years ago and where his close friend, William, was laid to rest in 2018. “We need a positive memory from this beautiful church," Graham reflects. "For the past 12 years, it's given us so many sad memories."
The artist even hinted at his wedding plans after penning a song called "Say Yes (Church Ballad)" released in 2018. The lyrics read, "I'm going back inside that church again / To marry her and now let go of him."
"So now," Graham adds, "we'll create the best and brightest memories with all of our friends and family."
The singer, of course, helped add a bright new memory to Maillet and Leonard's love story after learning that his 2015 album, Blue, helped the couple through the healing process after the death of her father. “‘Love Someone’ reminded us of how much we've grown individually and together as a couple over the years,” Leonard says. “Even on our toughest days, we take comfort in knowing we have each other."
“It’s amazing to know that we have an impact on people’s lives,” Graham concludes of the live proposal. “I mean, our songs are played at so many big events, most notably weddings and funerals. Knowing how much the musical choices matter at those events, it’s an extreme honor that people all across the globe choose our songs.”
