A day set aside each year to celebrate your girlfriend, National Girlfriend Day is one of those holidays that we're not really sure where it originated, but we definitely don't hate it. Whether you have a girlfriend, are about to ask someone to be your girlfriend or are a girlfriend—anyone can (and should!) celebrate the holiday.

National Girlfriend Day is celebrated annually on August 1st. We're not exactly sure why this date was chosen, but we like that it is far enough away from the holiday season and Valentine's Day so it stands out on its own. Besides, who wouldn't want another excuse to celebrate their love?

Make Them a Playlist

Ah, the long lost art of making a mixtape — it's easy, free and super thoughtful. Nowadays a mixtape is more of a digital playlist, but still special nonetheless. Think of songs they love, songs that remind you of them or songs that have meaning for the both of you. Put them together, slap a sweet title on it and voila!

If their love language is gifts, then this one is a no-brainer. It doesn't have to be expensive, just thoughtful. Surprise them with something that reminds you of them or that you know they'll love and their National Girlfriends Day will be made.

You know if your girlfriend is all about public displays of affection on social media or not—so only do this if you know it will make their day.
