Whether you're newly engaged or have been married for years, if you're reading this chances are you're asking yourself, "how much does it cost to resize a ring?" Resizing an engagement ring is a very common practice for many reasons. Whether the engagement was a surprise and the ring doesn't quite fit perfectly or if you find that your ring gets too tight or too loose with age, it's quite common to get an engagement ring resized and most jewelers can accommodate this request. The cost to resize an engagement ring will depend on the individual ring and whether you are resizing it to be smaller or larger.

In this article:

How Much Does it Cost to Resize a Ring?

The cost to resize a ring can vary based on many factors including the engagement ring metal, the complexity of the ring and how much it needs to be resized. This can also vary depending on where you live. Lexi Winchester, CEO and founder of LabLove says, "From my experience in the jewelry industry, I have sized rings that were as simple as a $50 charge and as complicated as a $300 charge." On average, you can expect to spend around $100 as a baseline. Use The Knot Budget Tool to calculate this cost in your wedding budget.

How Much Does it Cost to Resize a Ring Larger

"It is more expensive to size a ring to be larger because the jeweler will have to add additional metal to the band, increasing labor and material costs," Winchester says. To increase a ring size, the jeweler must either add additional metal or stretch out the existing metal (this can only be done to resize up to a half size larger). "When a jeweler resizes a ring to a larger size, he or she will either stretch the ring with heat or cut the band to insert a small piece of metal that corresponds with the band's existing metal choice, of course, and then solder it."

The exact cost can vary because each ring is different. Ultimately, the complexity of the ring will be the largest factor in assessing price. For example, a ring with pave diamonds all the way around the band is more complex to resize and thus more expensive (keep this in mind when shopping for an engagement ring). Make a consultation with your jeweler to get an estimate on resizing costs based on your particular ring.

How Much Does it Cost to Resize a Ring Smaller

Resizing a ring to be smaller is typically less expensive than making a ring larger. "When making the ring smaller, the cost will mainly only include any labor since there were no additional materials used," Winchester explains. Similar to how your seamstress will take in a dress, your jeweler can "take in" your ring. This is done by cutting off the excess metal and then soldering the band back together—but don't worry, the soldering makes for a seamless finish so you won't be able to tell the ring has been cut at all. Winchester shares, "The jeweler will always clean and polish the band to make sure the change looks seamless." The jeweler may also bend the ring inward to decrease the size.

Does Resizing a Ring Impact Its Value?

Resizing a ring should not impact its value. "The only way that resizing will impact the value of a ring is if the quality of the work was poor, such as leaving a visible mark where the cut was made," Winchester says. "The other way that resizing can impact the value of a ring is if the ring has been resized multiple times because this wears down the metal over time and thus also impacts the structural integrity of the ring."

It's important to go to a trusted jeweler to ensure your ring is in good hands (more on that later). Making sure you have the correct ring size the first time you go to get your ring resized will also help to ensure an accurate fit and eliminate any follow-up visits.

How Long Does It Take to Resize a Ring?

Once again, the complexity of the ring will determine how long it takes to get it resized. A simple stretching out of a ring to be larger on a minimalistic band can take as little as ten minutes, whereas a more complex size adjustment can take months. Be sure to inquire about timing when getting your ring resized, especially if you need it back for a certain date i.e. the wedding day.

Where to Get Your Engagement Ring Resized

The Knot Vendor Marketplace is a great resource to find trusted jewelers near you. Filter by location and read customer reviews all in one place. While you could send your ring in to be resized online, we recommend going in person to a jeweler to ensure a proper fit and so you can talk through any questions regarding cost and timeline face to face.
