How Long Does it Take to Make an Engagement Ring?
"Designing a bespoke engagement ring with us will take approximately four to six weeks," Wegman says. This timeline can vary slightly depending on the complexity of your ring, however, four to six weeks is a good benchmark timeline to keep in mind when beginning engagement ring shopping. However, if you're worried about how long it takes to order an engagement ring, there are options if you are in a time crunch. "If you're looking at a tighter timeline, we also offer a stunning selection of in-stock and ready-to-ship engagement rings that can arrive as quickly as the next day," Wegman shares.
How to Make an Engagement Ring
From your initial consultation to the final ring, there are a few important steps that go into creating an engagement ring. Below, Wegman walks us through the engagement ring timeline from start to finish.
Consultation
The first step to creating your dream engagement ring is scheduling a consultation with your jeweler. "During your first consultation—whether in our NYC showroom or virtually—you'll be paired with one of our GIA-certified bridal consultants who can offer in-depth diamond education," Wegman tells us of Ring Concierge's process. During this step, you and your jeweler will work together to design a totally custom ring or modify an existing ring. If you're not sure where to start, The Knot Vendor Marketplace is a great resource to find trusted jewelers near you and read reviews from real couples.
It's important to bring any inspirational images you may have to your consultation so that your jeweler can clearly understand your vision. If you have a preferred engagement ring metal or stone preference now is the time to make that clear. This is also a good time to discuss your engagement ring budget so that you can align on what rings fall within your comfortable price range. While working with your jewelry, be sure to speak up to voice your opinion and ask questions as you go. Your jeweler is there to help you and will be happy to answer your questions and guide you through the process.
Sourcing Stones
Once you've landed on a vision for your engagement ring, the team will get to work sourcing stones and metals for it. Wegman explains, "After your initial consultation, your bridal consultant will source stones tailored to your preferences, so you get a stone that feels uniquely yours." Sometimes this step can take longer depending on your specific stone preferences.
Jewelers Create the Ring
After the design is finalized and the materials are selected, it's time for the jeweler to start creating your ring. "Once you've selected your perfect diamond and customized setting, our master bench jewelers will bring your vision to life," Wegman shares. The ring is made either by hand or with a wax casting. Once the ring is complete it will either be shipped to you or available for in-store pickup.
"If you're envisioning a fully custom setting, our design team will work closely with you to bring your ideas to life," Wegman says. "This level of care and collaboration might extend the delivery date beyond the usual four to six weeks, but the timeline will be communicated to you throughout the journey."
Can You Buy an Engagement Ring in One Day?
Yes, you can buy an engagement ring in one day if you're on a tight timeline. Many jewelers, like Ring Concierge, offer ready-to-ship engagement rings that can be purchased at any time. "We offer a selection of ready-to-ship engagement rings in some of our most loved styles and settings, so you can find and purchase the perfect ring right away," Wegman tells us.
Ready-to-ship rings are not only a time-saving option, but they're also a great way to take the guesswork out of designing a ring. Those who prefer to choose something that's already made rather than design their own ring will love the ease of selecting a ready-to-ship ring. These tried and true styles are ready to ship for a reason: they're best-sellers and customer-favorite styles.
