The Semi-Formal Wedding Dress Code, Decoded
Just how formally are you supposed to dress for a semi-formal wedding? Semi-formal wedding attire is an extremely popular choice as far as dress codes go, but it's also one of the more ambiguous ones since "casual" and "semi-formal" can seem awfully similar. According to The Knot Real Weddings Study, which surveyed nearly 10,000 newlyweds who were married in 2023, 62% of couples opted to have a semi-formal wedding. Why? It's neither too fancy nor too casual, a sweet spot that can take some major sartorial pressure off of guests.
Here's the simplest way to define it: Semi-formal attire falls somewhere between casual attire and formal attire. While you won't need to show up in an evening gown or tuxedo, it's not a situation where anything goes, either. Below, we're outlining exactly what semi-formal wedding guest attire means for men and women, including some of the most common questions about this tricky dress code. We've also solicited expert advice and hand-picked several looks to inspire your choices when you're ready to start shopping.

What Is Semi-Formal Wedding Attire?
Semi-formal wedding attire is dressier than casual attire but not as dressy as formal attire. Sometimes referred to as "dressy casual," it usually requires some traditionally formal pieces but frees up the ways you can wear them. "It's polished and stylish but not overly dressy," says Risa Kostis, wedding stylist and cofounder of The Rescue Kit Company. For suiting, dress shirts and ties aren't required, nor are matching suit pieces. Yep—that means going the no-jacket route is completely appropriate. You can mix and match suit separates, work a sweater into the outfit (a great option for fall or winter weddings), or leave your tie at home. For those wearing dresses, something shorter or midi-length is perfect, though it's also appropriate to wear jumpsuits and separates.
Kostis notes that the season and time of day may also play a part in how you piece together your semi-formal wedding outfits. "Lighter colors and fabrics are typically seen as more appropriate for daytime events, while you'll find darker tones and different textures at evening celebrations," she says. "You might also see seasonal fabric changes in this style of dress." For example, a tailored linen suit would be ideal for a summer destination wedding, while a snowy locale could call for thicker textured fabrics like flannels and velvets.
What to Wear to a Semi-Formal Wedding
If you're wondering what to wear to a semi-formal wedding, you've come to the right place. Occupying the space between formal and casual, you'll want to toe that line without crossing too far in either direction. With that in mind, here are some of the most common questions about dressing for a semi-formal wedding.
Is semi-formal wedding attire the same as cocktail?
Semi-formal and cocktail dress codes are relatively similar, but they're not the same. You can think of semi-formal wedding attire as a slightly toned-down version of cocktail attire. These two dress codes overlap in the sense that they're both less formal than black-tie attire and allow for more flexibility in color and style. However, cocktail attire leans slightly more formal and structured, usually requiring darker suit colors and dresses that feel more elevated and evening-appropriate. "For semi-formal attire, women can wear short dresses, longer dresses or dressy jumpsuits," says Kostis. "Men may opt for lighter-colored suits (versus tuxedos) for daytime weddings and, in some cases, can get away with linen shorts with polo shirts, collared shirts or even a light sweater."
Can I wear a floor-length dress to a semi-formal wedding?
While formal, black tie and white tie are the only wedding dress codes that require floor-length gowns, Kostis says a longer dress is okay for a semi-formal wedding as long as it's not overly formal and feels right for the occasion. "If the wedding is outdoors during the day or in a casual setting, a tea-length, midi or knee-length dress may feel more in line with the semi-formal dress code," she says. If you do wear a longer dress, opt for something a little more laidback and casual than a full-on gown—think a flowy printed maxi dress for the summer or a polished ankle-length sweater dress for winter.
Can you wear jeans to a semi-formal wedding?
Even though semi-formal is interchangeable with "dressy casual," you shouldn't take the phrase too literally. In general, we don't recommend wearing jeans to a wedding (even the most casual weddings), and especially not for a semi-formal dress code. Opt for dress pants or khakis instead, paired with a blazer or suit jacket and tie.
Kostis says the only exception to this rule is when the couple specifically requests that guests wear jeans. "If it's a ranch wedding and denim is encouraged for either the wedding day or wedding-related events, then it's absolutely acceptable to show up in jeans," she says. "But under normal semi-formal circumstances, however, I always think it's best to err on the side of being a tad more dressy to be safe and honor the occasion in good taste."
What shoes do you wear with semi-formal wedding attire?
According to Kostis, semi-formal footwear should be both elegant and comfortable, and the right choice can vary depending on the outfit, venue and time of day. Semi-formal wedding guest shoes for women can include high heels, like classic pumps, wedges or strappy sandals, though a more refined pair of flats will also work. Oxfords, loafers, derbies and dressy leather sneakers are all good wedding guest shoes for men attending a semi-formal wedding. Avoid casual sneakers (even if they're brand new) and stay away from flip-flops and anything overly chunky.

Semi-Formal Attire for Women
When it comes to semi-formal attire for women, Kostis says the goal is to look polished and pulled-together without going overboard. Avoid anything overly casual like a sundress or sneakers, but don't go with something too formal like a ball gown or anything resembling black-tie attire. Find middle ground with a knee-length, tea-length or midi-length cocktail dress, and remember that dressy jumpsuits and suits for women are also appropriate semi-formal women's outfits. Lean into soft colors and light, airy fabrics like chiffon or crepe for daytime weddings, and stick to richer colors and textures for evenings. Last but not least, use accessories to your advantage. Jewelry can elevate something on the casual side, while sensible block-heel sandals (versus embellished, sky-high stilettos) can tone down a fancier ensemble. Here are some shoppable outfit ideas we love when it comes to female semi-formal wear.

Semi-Formal Attire for Men
Unsure how to dress for a semi-formal wedding as a male guest? According to Kostis, you can never go wrong with a timeless tailored suit—but don't be afraid to have a little fun with it. "Staying within the basic subtleties of a classic suit but playing with texture, fabric and color can be deemed acceptable and welcomed in a relaxed setting," she says. A crisp, long-sleeve white button-down is a great shirt choice, though a polished white tee can work when paired with something elevated enough. For daytime events, a blazer and slacks or a lighter suit are always reliable, but for evening weddings (or if you want to err on the side of caution), we suggest wearing a classic dark suit. Finish your look with a standard necktie—other accessories, like cufflinks, a pocket square, or a vest, are completely optional. Classic retailers such as Brooks Brothers, Men's Wearhouse and J.Crew are your friends when it comes time to put together a men's wedding guest outfit. Shop our examples below for maximum efficiency.
