There are wedding cakes, and then there is City Sweets. Working with Deborah was like working with a close friend who genuinely wanted to make sure we chose the cake of our dreams in both vision and taste.
As someone who chooses her dessert before choosing her main course, our wedding cake was extremely important to me in every aspect, and City Sweets went beyond my expectations. We chose two flavors (coconut cake with dark chocolate ganache & Champagne cake with three berry filling) and could not get enough of either! I am not typically a fan of fondant, but Debra uses an imported type that tasted light and “marshmallowy”, instead of that heavy plastic that people usually scrape off to the side!
The design of our cake was stunning. I wanted a Winter theme and my husband had an aversion to flowers--in stepped Deborah with the creation of delicate cascading snowflakes. Our solid shimmery tiers alternated with her signature stamped design which made the cake look beautiful from every angle.
To say our cake was delicious and beautiful is an understatement. I’m actually looking forward to digging into the tier we saved for our 1-year anniversary and can't wait to work with Deborah in the future for other special occasions!
Unfortunately I wish I had better news! But we are very unhappy with the end result of the cake. I've attached pictures for you to see what I'm talking about. We had several of our guests point out and comment on the presentation of the cake, which was embarrassing for us.
I've attached a side by side comparison of the photo we provided as our inspiration, and the end result.
The colors weren't the same colors in the pallet that we described to you. The flowers were lavender and baby blue. our color pallet was deep peacock: navy blue, dark plum and olive green. In our tasting session, I said I didn't want any light blue colors, no turquoise, no pink or bright purple. The fondant was more of a royal blue than navy blue. There was only a slight touch of green on the leaves and it wasn't olive green.
The fondant was bumpy and uneven and there was a crease on the side. The gold ribbon was also bumpy and uneven and looked sloppily put together.
The foundation that the cake was sitting on was messily put together as you can see in the photos. We had to fix it ourselves to make it presentable for pictures. The foundation was also white, instead of navy blue.
We can't use any of the cake pictures taken by our photographer for display or printing, the cake is nowhere near the beauty and molded precision that we expected to get for $750. Several of our guest commented on how horrible the cake looked which was very embarrassing.
Deborah is a genius baker. She made us the most elegant and flavorsome cake we could have wished for on our wedding day! All of our guests complemented us on the cake. During the tasting we weren't sure how we were going to pick between all of the wonderful flavors available, so Deborah made each level of our cake into a different flavor which turned out fantastically. Deborah is extremely kind and professional and an absolute joy to work with. I cannot recommend her enough!
Deborah did a great job with our cake! After a few communications issues (emails that were lost), Deborah and I were able to work out the perfect cake close to my wedding date. After sending a few mockups, she and I spoke on the phone and fleshed out some ideas together, and our cake was just so gorgeous. I wanted something simple yet elegant, Art Deco-inspired but still modern, and she executed it beautifully. We had three flavors: chocolate with chocolate ganache, vanilla with vanilla chai frosting, and champagne with three berry filling. We were so busy throughout the night, that we only had a few bites of our chocolate cake (which was so rich and delicious...and I’m not even a huge chocolate fan!) and the few people we asked about the cake had chocolate too, so we didn’t get any feedback on the other flavors. The cake was delivered on time, it was displayed beautifully, and I am so glad that we went with City Sweets!
My cake was GORGEOUS and tasted amazing! Deborah was wonderful, really great to work with. I had an amazing experience and I'd recommend her to anyone who is in need of a jaw dropping cake. Love, love & love!! FIVE STARS for Deborah!
My (now) husband and I are serious cake people. For example, on our first anniversary, we celebrated with three different kinds of cakes. Obviously, we wanted only the best for our wedding cake. We first tasted Deborah's cake at a friend's wedding, and knew we had to hire her for ours. Deborah is lovely, easy to work with, and her cakes are incredibly beautiful and seriously delicious! For our wedding last weekend, we chose three cakes in one: almond cake with chocolate frosting, chocolate cake with raspberry preserves, and peach cake with passionfruit frosting. It was delicious. So delicious, in fact, that there was none left over and now we need to order another cake for our next event (ok, the event may just be binge-watching Netflix, but it still calls for cake) because it was that good. Thanks so much Deborah!
Deborah was amazing! I am gluten free and wasn't sure if the cake would be good or how much I could eat. Somehow Deborah's cakes actually taste like real cake! We chose the champagne flavored cake and triple berry icing with a buttercream frosting. Our cake was fantastic. Deborah even incorporated our wedding invitation into the cake and it was truly stunning and very unique. Thank you so much for making a delicious cake that I could actually eat!
How any one can make such deliciousness is just mind-boggling...I came in with expectations that "wedding cake just isn't good, but looks pretty." Deb at City Sweets surpassed that expectation by providing a STUNNING too-good to want to eat it wedding cake for my husband and I. The cake (we had three different flavors for a four-tier cake) was HEAVENLY DELICIOUS. She uses the freshest and BEST ingredients and makes you want to scream for more.
We had quite picky (cake/dessert) eaters at our wedding (90% from the food industry) and people were going back for seconds!
Thank you Deb & City Sweets...you will be our go-to baker for everything!
Selecting City Sweets and Confections was one of the best decisions I ever made. Deborah was very sweet and easy to work with from start to finish. One of the reasons why I chose City Sweets was because our cake tasting was so fun and Deborah really understood what we wanted. Our wedding cake was beautiful and very delicious. It was honestly the best cake I've ever had in my life.
In planning our NYC wedding from London, it was important to use that we had our cake provided by someone we could trust. We contacted multiple cake vendors and were lucky enough to land on City Sweets and Confections.
Deborah was fantastic to work with -- from the first call we had with her she was the best. She listened to our vision for the cake and provided helpful suggestions and ideas for what she could do to make it perfect.
But what about the tasting living overseas? Deborah took the time to provide us a tasting one week before our wedding, the day after we arrived in NYC, so we knew we would have the cake that we wanted. When disaster struck and we got caught in traffic going from the Bronx to Manhattan, and we were over an hour late to the tasting (getting on past 7pm), Deborah boxed up a number of the most popular cakes and creams for us to take back to our hotel and test at our leisure, letting us know she was available if we had any questions. It really felt like she went out of her way to make us happy and cared about our event.
We selected the delicious red velvet, and when we saw the cake at the event our jaws dropped. It was absolutely amazing. We received many compliments on how it looked, and tasted, and we look at the pictures now and still talk about how great it was. Deborah worked with our budget, was incredibly friendly, and we couldn't be more happy with how everything worked out. Thank you, Deborah!
Deborah was incredibly thoughtful from start to finish. Her cakes are delicious and our wedding guests loved her Prosecco cake with three berry filling. Additionally, I have a gluten allergy and tried many bakeries that are "known" for their gluten free cakes, but Deborah makes the best. Our guests had no idea! We attended another wedding a year later and her cake was again delicious. If you want a cake that is guaranteed to be delicious City Sweets & Confections is your place.
Worst cake experience of my life. I contacted Deborah months before my wedding to ensure I had a beautiful and delicious cake. We had a few nice back and forth e-mails and I scheduled a tasting the following week. She later changed the time and location which I was totally fine with. On the day of the tasting, I contacted her to confirm. (which actually she should do) She told me she sent me an email 4 days ago saying she was no longer available on my wedding day. WTF??? That is a total blatant lie as I keep a meticulous track of all my e-mails. I responded by asking her if she could re-send that e-mail which will show the date and time. Poof! Just like that, she disappeared. I sent her another e-mail stating she does bad business and she never responded. I never even got an apology. I was willing to shell out big bucks for a wedding cake. Imagine she would have been MIA on my wedding day! Use Empire cake or Butterfly Bakeshop instead. Steer clear of this b*tch
I ordered my wedding cake from city sweets. In all honesty, I can't review the taste, as I was far too busy during the wedding to actually eat any cake! But what I do want to review is the quality of the service and the look of the cake. First, the cake was very pretty - four tiers with purple flowers. But it wasn't anything special, and I could have easily found a cheaper bakery to provide the same cake. Unfortunately, when I paid for the cake and went to my tasting, the baker, Deborah, promised an "art deco" style cake . . . and after paying the deposit and waiting over two months for her designs, was told that she couldn't actually deliver on her promise of an art deco design. The designs she did send me (a) weren't at all art deco; and (b) were really unattractive. We were coming up on the wedding at that point and I simply didn't have the brain power or time to find another baker (especially since I live in another country and scheduled my tasting based on when I would be in NYC.) So, I just went to her website and chose a cake design for her to replicate. Second, I found out the day after the wedding that Deborah was quite late in her delivery of the cake, and the wedding coordinator had to call her to rush her to the venue . . . apparently Deborah was stuck in traffic. But, it's NY. There is traffic. You leave early - end of story. I'm just glad I was unaware of the situation because it would have been very stressful. I honestly have never left a bad review on Yelp, but I have to be honest. I would not hire Deborah for any event again. I think she is incredibly talented, but I don't find that she runs her business very professionally and she needs to work on keeping her time commitments and design promises
Deborah and I got to design a custom five tier cake together with three different flavors. It was more beautiful than I ever envisioned and quite different from the other cakes she'd designed. We had two tastings to finalize the Cake choices. My only disappointment was that the bottom tier filling was not what I had asked for. We had a miscommunication about the last flavor, that I had corrected, but it stil wasnt right. But it was still delicious and overall everything turned out great. Cant wait for our anniversary cake next April.
City Sweets literally is the best place to get to order a cake. Deborah is quick to answer your email and really works with you to get the design and flavor you want.
Aside from my amazing flowers the one other thing that everyone raved about was the cake. It was modern and beautiful and tasted amazing. The ingredients are so high end that you get the best of what the cake world has to offer.
Also did i mention she is HYSTERICAL!!!
Deborah did a great job creating the cake for our wedding! She is so creative and talented. My guests loved her cake and she was so easy to work with throughout the process. We HIGHLY recommend her!
We absolutely loved Deborah. She was a pleasure and easy to deal with throughout the entire process. She did a one large wedding cake and a groom's cake. They were both fabulous and our guests commented on how delicious they were. We went with wild strawberry cake with vanilla bean mascarpone frosting - the best cake we ever had. We saved a piece (to be eaten on our one year anniversary) but it didn't last! We downed it the next day! Her expertise and artistic skills guided us throughout the designing process helping us create our own special cakes. She also use only the best and fresh ingredients (the scent of the cake alone is to die for!) We are planning to use her for our future special events and we highly recommend her!
Deborah was great, giving us exactly what we wanted for the price we named. We had two tastings with her before choosing our flavors, and the flavors were delicious and unique. Even the foundant was delicious.
Deborah from City Sweets made us the yummiest wedding cake I've ever tasted. She has such interesting flavors, from lavendar and mint chocolate and amazing basics too. She was able to do tiers of different flavors and made a wonderful design. Great sugar flower work and stenciling.
The cake was delicious and it looked amazing. All my guests wanted to take a picture with the cake since they kept saying to me it was the best cake they have ever seen.
Deborah made a beautiful cake for us that was pearlized with tasty berry and lemon fillings. When we met we did a nice tasting of her different cakes, she gave me 4 different flavors with different icing and filling combinations. She was very easy, with low-stress, plus she's very friendly and sweet. Would definitely recommend her!!!
Deb was awesome...
The red velvet cake with vanilla bean buttercream was beyond delicious. So good that we already ate our top tier (got married two weeks ago)!
Deborah Lauren from City Sweets was wonderful to work with. She made us an incredibly beautiful 4 tiered wedding cake for 150 people. Two of the layers had the design of our wedding invitation and well as beautiful flowers. The cake flavors we chose were strawberry cake with chocolate filling and chocolate cake with raspberry filling. The cake was the best wedding cake I have ever tasted in my life and it was definitely a piece of art. The flowers she created were not the colors we had discussed but in the end it was much prettier that way! Put your trust in Deb as she really is an artist. She also made us a groom's cake in the design of a tux and that cake was pistachio with chocolate filling. Delicious! You will only thank yourself for booking Deb - everyone is still talking about our cakes. She is also very affordable for the incredible quality she provides. I already can't wait until our 1 year anniversary as she has told us we didn't need to save our wedding cake top because she will give us a complimentary fresh one on our anniversary. We're so looking forward to that!
This was one of the hardest things to find in the city. An affordable baker willing to execute my idea without sacrificing taste. We selected her because we loved the variety of flavors she offered. I thought a chai spice cake would be great for a fall wedding. When we met with her she was very personable. I brought her a picture of the cake I wanted and I gave her color swatches. She assured me that even though the design was tricky it could be done. It was a simplified city skyline made in fondant on three tiers. She offered what she felt was a fair price for the amount of work it would take.;In all fairness to this vendor she clearly has many brides that are happy with her cakes. So I'm not sure why mine ended up looking the way it did. It was poorly executed and looked slapped together. It simply did not look like a city skyline and some of the colors were not what I would have picked. It's difficult since you never get to see the final result until it's too late. If I had been able to give my input while it was being put together it might have come out better but we will never know. My husband thought it was fine. Reviews were mixed. Some people thought it was original and other people couldn't tell what it was. Bottom line. not worth what I paid for at all. She needs to practice more before she can charge those prices. The taste was ok.
