Patisserie Bechler, a charming bakery located on the Monterey Peninsula, is an absolute gem! We used this authentic French bakery for our daughter’s wedding, and we could not have been more pleased with the result!
Gérard, the pâtissier/owner wholly realized my daughter’s French wedding cake dream – the Croquembouche. Gerard went way beyond the classic croquembouche, crafting the reception’s pièce-de résistance.
The guests were all in admiration of this piece of art, including the French relatives who contemplated whether their local pâtissier back home could get close to creating such a beautiful croquembouche.
We were sold on Patisserie Bechler from our first meeting with Gérard. Having arrived a bit early for our meeting, I was graciously welcomed by a staff member who sat me at a table, in the lovely Alsace-decorated seating area, with a fabulous cup of coffee. Gérard showed up right on time, with a huge smile and a “let’s make your daughter’s dream come true” attitude. Gérard has an incredible personality! He is engaging, warm, full of humor and goodness. We face-timed my daughter for the meeting since she was not local. Gerard took notes and shared photos of croquembouches he had prepared for past weddings.
Gérard also guided us in selecting an assortment of petits-fours to complement the flavors and aesthetics of the croquembouche centerpiece. We had one more meeting to finalize details. Gérard also volunteered to communicate with our wedding florist about decorating the croquembouche with fresh flowers, one of our daughter’s visions. The result could not have been more perfect! Not only were the croquembouche’s dual-flavored choux and assortment of petits-fours delicious, but the visuals of the dessert table were exquisite. Guests were overheard stating it was all too beautiful to be eaten!
We wholeheartedly recommend Patisserie Bechler for any special occasion. Gerard’s undeniable artisanship will permit him to craft any design or specific request. The process will be a delight and the result will be flawless. Lastly, we were enormously grateful that for such high-quality craftsmanship, Gérard’s prices are extremely reasonable. We may be done with weddings for a while in our family, but anytime we are in the Monterey Peninsula area, we will be certain to stop at Patisserie Bechler for a delicious treat and a delightful chat with Gérard!
Although communication could be improved (multiple emails and calls back and forth), the wedding cake and petit fours turned out amazing for my wedding. They were simply delicious! I asked them to bake a cake that was tiramisu flavored but make it look like a wedding cake. You know how tiramisu is...it can be droopy and look sloppy, but the chef worked wonders and recommended a different type of cream base. Highly recommend this place!!!! The only constructive criticism I have is the communication through email and the payment (could be simplified). I recommend you go in and talk with them for easier communication! While you are there, get a lemon danish to go...they are delicious.
Bechlers was a fixture of my life growing up in Pacific Grove, so I knew their pastries and small cakes were good, but it wasn’t until the actual wedding that they definitely proved their large cakes are just as good of a quality.
I ordered two cakes for my wedding, a chocolate sheet cake (the chocolate mousse and raspberry one) and the tiered cake was a three tier Brie Au Kirsch.
Dealing with them was simple, email and call back and forth, go to a tasting, order the cakes. I provided photos of the styles I wanted. I wanted to have real (washed of course) succulents on my cake as decorations. They said that was fine.
Day before the wedding we dropped off ta bunch of succulents we liked for them to chose from. They delivered the cake on time and worked well with our venue.
Also, after having the cakes top tier wrapped well and frozen after the wedding, eating it on our anniversary was an amazing treat. It only tasted a day old or so, mostly just some texture loss from freezing.
I have since moved away but my husband and I still talk about how delicious the cake was and how we made the best choice.
Last night, my now husband and I were touched by a tinge of sadness as we put away our wedding cake to save for a future anniversary. We very well could have eaten the whole thing in one sitting, it was that good! Françoise and her team made the most beautiful, delicious creations, and we can't wait to eat more in future. All left us wanting more (we had Gateau Pralin, Brazilia, Framboisier, and Brie au Kirsch) but the Gateau Pralin was a particular favorite. Françoise was wonderful to work with, attentive to adhering to our budget, and made our vision come to life perfectly. While we are eager to eat our actual wedding cake again, we look forward to visiting Patisserie Bechler again and again in person to eat other treats. Merci mille fois, Patisserie Bechler!
We loved our wedding cake from Patisserie Bechler! Francoise was wonderful to work with and worked with us to choose a cake design based off our tastes that they felt confident in creating. The cake was moist, delicious, and not overly sweet. They also were able to accommodate the dietary restrictions we had requested. We loved being able to choose multiple flavors and create our own combinations, and our guests loved the options. The cake was so much more beautiful than I had imagined when I finally saw it, and we loved enjoying the leftovers!
I was so happy when my wedding coordinator, Simone Lennon, recommended this bakery because we were not happy with any of the others we had tried. During our tasting session, Gerard won us over instantly with his personality, his portfolio, but most of all his absolutely delicious cakes! We booked him instantly. He is able to do pretty much any design, size, and special request. For me, I was concerned about taste, and wanted just a simple design for the cake. I did not have a specific idea in mind, but sent a few pictures of cakes that I liked. On my wedding day, he brought the cake to the venue, and when he saw the cake stand and other decor, he decided that the cake needed something extra, and he added some decorations on the spot. The cake turned out absolutely beautiful - perfect for my style and the wedding. We had two flavors, the brie au kirsch and the triple chocolate mousse, and they were both delectable - huge hits at the reception. The best part is that his bakery in Monterey serves these flavors, so we can go back anytime to taste our wedding cake again. They have excellent breakfast and lunch to boot! I would recommend this bakery to anyone have a wedding in the area. It beats out its competition by a landslide!
Cake came out great and the baker is no nonsense. He decorated the cake beautifully and was really easy to work with.
I don't even normally eat cake, but Patisserie Bechler makes a delicious cake!
I ordered my wedding cake through Patisserie Bechler for Tuesday, March 29, 2011. The cake was to be delivered to the address I provided to them at 2pm. At 2:45pm, the cake still had not arrived and my friend called the bakery to find out where it was. I spoke with Veronique and she told me that they forgot about the cake and had it for the following weekend.
Veronique accepted blame and I told her I was going to want my money back and she agreed. My friend was told the cake would be delivered to the house by 4:15p. At 4:15p, on the way to my wedding ceremony, my friend called to confirm the cake was delivered, and she was told that the driver just left and would be there in 20min. Again, unacceptable. The cake that was delivered was not what we ordered nor was it edible.
Moreover, it was evident to not only us but our guests who commented on the cake as well, that it wasn't cooked all the way through. Our middle tier had to be thrown away as they were cutting it because it just fell apart. The next morning, we cut into the top tier of the cake and it just oozed out; it was disgusting.
Lastly, I wanted my money back and they will not give me a full refund. They gave me half of my money back minus the delivery charge. I also filed an official complaint with the BBB.
