Maicol and Makayla first met on September 12, 2021, at the launch of Casa Church. Maicol’s aunt introduced them by telling them she thought they should get married. At this point, Makayla knew no Spanish and Maicol knew no English. As the weeks went on, Makayla would always search the crowds at church for Maicol’s face. She rarely got to see him outside of serving at church because Maicol was busy finishing his master’s degree. Eventually, Maicol’s family and all of their friends banded together to try and convince the pair to start dating.

As luck would have it (or as family schemes unfolded), Makayla, her mom, and sister were invited to Maicol’s aunts house for her to teach them how to make tortillas. It was during this lesson that Maicol turned to his aunt and said “okay, I’m going to give this a try.” A few days later went to Makayla and asked to start texting with her, and they were soon at a friend’s soccer game with a group of their friends from church. They sat next to each other and spoke face to face in a mix of English and Spanish with the help of a friend who could translate. Soon, they were talking on the phone every day. A few days before her birthday, Maicol asked Makayla out on their first date. They only ended up having to use a translator on their phones a couple of times and Makayla accidentally ended up giving Maicol directions to Arkansas on that first date, but nevertheless the pair had a fantastic time. The night actually ended in a surprise birthday party for Makayla with all many of Makayla’s family and friends. After that first date, Makayla and Maicol continued to spend time together and grow in their friendship, building the foundation for their relationship. On April 9, 2022, Maicol surprised Makayla at Shelby Farms Park by asking her to be his girlfriend with balloons and flowers, surrounded by a small group of family and friends. His exact words were, “You want?”
Fast forward to December 2022, Maicol’s family was in town visiting and Maicol realized that he wanted to propose to Makayla while all his family was still in town. On December 29, 2022, Maicol decided to propose, he went to buy the ring the next day. With the help of Makayla’s family and his family too, Maicol quickly pulled together a proposal in the gazebo of Makayla’s great aunt’s house. Makayla’s mom made up a story to get her over there. Makayla arrived at her great aunt’s house on December 31, 2022 to find Maicol standing in the gazebo surrounded by fairy lights, candles, and rose petals. Their friends and family were all there lined up as Makayla walked over to Maicol to celebrate the couple after Makayla said “Yes!” Maicol handed Makayla a huge bouquet of tulips and got down on one knee and said “Will you marry me?” And then he said it in Spanish as well, “Quieres casarte conmigo?” Makayla responded with “Si!”

A month later they set a wedding date for the following December, but the pair were so excited to start their lives together that they made things official in a small ceremony in April of 2023. They will be tying the knot (again) and celebrating with all their friends and extended families this December with a traditional Mexican wedding ceremony. They are are excited to celebrate and see all of you there December 29th!

Maicol y Makayla se conocieron el 12 de septiembre de 2021, en la inauguración de Casa Church. La tía de Maicol las presentó diciéndoles que creía que debían casarse. En ese momento, Makayla no sabía español y Maicol no sabía inglés. Con el paso de las semanas, Makayla siempre buscaba el rostro de Maicol entre la multitud de la iglesia. Rara vez lo veía fuera de la iglesia porque Maicol estaba ocupado terminando su maestría. Al final, la familia de Maicol y todos sus amigos se unieron para intentar convencerles de que empezaran a salir.

La suerte quiso que Makayla, su madre y su hermana fueran invitadas a casa de la tía de Maicol para que ésta les enseñara a hacer tortillas. Fue durante esta lección que Maicol volteó a ver a su tía y le dijo ok, voy a intentarlo. Unos días después fue a ver a Makayla y le pidió empezar a enviarse mensajes de texto con ella, y pronto estaban en el partido de fútbol de un amigo con un grupo de sus amigos de la iglesia. Se sentaron una al lado de la otra y hablaron cara a cara en una mezcla de inglés y español con la ayuda de una amiga que podía traducir. Pronto empezaron a hablar por teléfono todos los días. Unos días antes de su cumpleaños, Maicol invitó a Makayla a salir por primera vez. Sólo tuvieron que usar un traductor en sus teléfonos un par de veces y Makayla terminó accidentalmente dándole a Maicol indicaciones para llegar a Arkansas en esa primera cita, pero a pesar de todo la pareja se lo pasó muy bien. La noche terminó en una fiesta sorpresa de cumpleaños para Makayla con toda su familia y amigos. Después de esa primera cita, Makayla y Maicol continuaron pasando tiempo juntos y creciendo en su amistad, construyendo los cimientos de su relación. El 9 de abril de 2022, Maicol sorprendió a Makayla en Shelby Farms Park pidiéndole que fuera su novia con globos y flores, rodeado de un pequeño grupo de familiares y amigos. Sus palabras exactas fueron: ¿Quieres?.
Un avance rápido hasta diciembre de 2022, la familia de Maicol estaba en la ciudad de visita y Maicol se dio cuenta de que quería proponerle matrimonio a Makayla mientras toda su familia estaba todavía en la ciudad. El 29 de diciembre de 2022, Maicol decidió declararse, fue a comprar el anillo al día siguiente. Con la ayuda de la familia de Makayla y también de la suya, Maicol organizó rápidamente una pedida de mano en el cenador de la casa de la tía abuela de Makayla. La madre de Makayla se inventó una historia para llevarla hasta allí. Makayla llegó a casa de su tía abuela el 31 de diciembre de 2022 y se encontró a Maicol de pie en el cenador, rodeado de luces de hadas, velas y pétalos de rosa. Sus amigos y familiares estaban todos allí en fila mientras Makayla se acercaba a Maicol para celebrar a la pareja después de que Makayla dijera ¡Sí!. Maicol le entregó a Makayla un enorme ramo de tulipanes y se arrodilló y le dijo: ¿Quieres casarte conmigo?. Y luego lo dijo también en español: ¿Quieres casarte conmigo?. Makayla respondió: ¡Sí!.
Un mes después fijaron la fecha de la boda para el siguiente mes de diciembre, pero la pareja estaba tan ilusionada por empezar su vida juntos que lo hicieron oficial en una pequeña ceremonia en abril de 2023. Este diciembre se casarán (de nuevo) y lo celebrarán con todos sus amigos y familiares en una ceremonia tradicional mexicana. Están ansiosos por celebrar y verlos a todos el 29 de diciembre.
