Our love story began in November 2019 at the Florida Classic. Right before the event, Nigel and Sy exchanged a few words. Sy flirtatiously told Nigel she would buy him a drink, but she had no expectations of seeing him in Orlando amongst the thousands of attendees. Immediately after the Battle of the Bands, she ran into Nigel and mainly spoke to his friends and did not deliver on her promise. The next day she saw Nigel again and questioned him about where her drink was. The two laughed it off and went their separate ways with no drinks and not many words. In January of 2020, Sy noticed Nigel was giving her more compliments than usual but being a nice person, she said thank you and kept it moving.
April 2020 is when Nigel became bold. After Sy posted a photo of her wearing a purple face mask because COVID had disrupted everyone's daily routine, he slid in her DMs and said, After this, you should let me take you out. If you know Sy, then you know she believed they were going nowhere, and he was just wasting her time with sweet talk that would never materialize. Sy stated that she lived in Oak Park, IL, while Nigel was in Corpus Christi, TX. Nigel's intelligence intrigued Sy, and she continued the conversation. After weeks of messaging on Instagram, Sy became bold and gave Nigel her number. He did not call the next day. Sy was worried that she was too bold and scared him off. That wasn't the case; he was studying for his Final Exams. He called her the next day, and they had a deep six-hour conversation! They talked about everything worth talking about, and Sy had become even more mesmerized. A couple of days later, while driving from Tennessee back to Illinois, Sy couldn't help but wonder, does this guy really like me? That day Nigel made a commitment to be completely single while he got to know her.
From then on, they talked on the phone every day for HOURS! We worked, studied, and slept on the phone. After 12 days of talking, Sy knew she was in love with Nigel. Of course, she could not admit this; she had to wait for the feelings to be mutual. When Nigel said he loved her, she happily said it back.
From then, our lives became intertwined. The bond that we've built through all of those conversations continued to grow. For two years, we were long-distance lovers and only saw each other once a month. We made numerous amount of memories. Our trips together were always fantastic, but it hurt to leave each others side. Sy always said, one day you will get tired of me leaving and change our lives.
On May 28th, 2022, Nigel asked for Sy's hand in marriage, sharing this moment surrounded by friends and family. We thank God for bringing us together and allowing us to have a love that is so genuine. Spending the rest of our lives together is always at the top of our minds.
